Getting Started with DosBox Turbo

DosBox Turbo

In this guide, we will guide you through starting up DosBox Turbo and configuring your first game, the popular DOS game: DOOM.

After reading this guide, you will be able to do the following:

Lets get started...

Step 1 - Download the DOOM game to your PC.

We first need to use a PC to download the DOS game of your choice. In this case, we will download DOOM. Most DOS games arrive in a zip archive. Click on the following link, to download shareware DOOM to your computer.

Step 2 - Unzip the archive on your PC and copy to Android Device

Using your favorite PC archiver (ie. WinZip) unzip the archive file on to your PC. You should end up with a folder on your PC called "dooms".

Step 3 - Copy the folder to your Android Device

Plug your Android device into your computer via USB. We will create a directory on our Android Internal Storage called "dos" where we will put all our DOS games.

Now copy the "dooms" folder into the newly created dos folder as shown below

Warning In the example above, we copied the games to the "Internal Storage" of our Android Device. You can also copy games to the "External Storage", but be aware if you are using Android 4.4+ (KitKat), Google has limited only certain directories to be writable on an External SD card. If you wish to use your External SD card, I recommend copying games to the public 'Download' (/{path to external sdcard}/Download/ ) directory if you plan on using External Storage. You can create a "dos" sub-directory as shown above. You will have to know the path to your external sd card.

Step 4 - Install and Enable the free virtual GamePad App

If you are not using an external USB/Bluetooth game controller or external Keyboard, you will need some way of controlling your game and sending it keyboard presses. Most DOS games were played via Keyboard. Now you'll also want to download my free virtual "Gamepad" app. Once you've installed the GamePad app, click the GamePad icon and follow the steps to enable it on your Android device. Then follow this video to setup the controls for doom:

Step 5 - Start DosBox Turbo and Configure the Game Settings

On your Android device, start DosBox Turbo. Now you will need to bring up the Keyboard and begin typing. There are several ways of bringing up the keyboard:

  1. In Portrait Orientation At the top of the screen, you'll see a keyboard icon, click this to show/hide the keyboard.
  2. In Landscape Orientation There will be no icon bar at the top of the screen. You can swipe down (from top to bottom) to bring up the icon bar with the Keyboard icon. Swipe Up to hide it again.
  3. In ANY orientation You always have the option of swiping (from LEFT to RIGHT) across your screen to bring up the "Quick Menu". From the Quick Menu you can enable/disable the keyboard.

Finally, after you brought up the keyboard and see the dos prompt (c: \) type the following:

Type the following at the c:\ prompt

c:\> cd dos
c:\DOS> cd dooms
c:\DOS\DOOMS> doom

DOOM should then launch. If you are using my free GamePad keyboard, you can now switch from the keyboard to the gamepad by swiping from left to right across the keyboard itself. You can also run the setup.exe if you want to change the DOOM settings. The procedure is basically the same for most DOS games.

Additional Information

Many DOS games have a configuration program that must be run first to configure the sound and graphics settings of the game before launching it. This file is often named setup.exe and will be located in the same directory as the game executable. Please remember DosBox Turbo defaults to SoundBlaster 16 emulation.
